How Antique Reproductions Can Improve Your Decorating Style
There are a lot of differing opinions as to what makes a good antique. Some believe that slight imperfections or something missing due to use are just authenticators and should never be repaired; others believe that the antique has to be complete and perfect for their consideration; still others, who consider themselves true conoisseurs insist that an antique be signed, just as any other work of art would be. These last clearly have the means to support this expensive point of view.
The real way to collect antiques is to be constantly alert to the kinds of antiques that are out there. If you were shopping for a race horse, a pedigreed dog, or a certain car, you would always keep your eyes and ears open for the right one for you. As for antiques, perhaps you would be just as happy with one of the quality reproductions that are made in the major cities of the world. People buy these all the time, and there are very many beautiful and sought after furniture and accessory reproductions. Real antique collectors, however, can spot a reproduction from a mile away. For the afficianado, reproductions do not have the ageless quality that an antique displays.
All of the parts of a true antique fit a perfect whole and the finish gains a certain patina with age. A fine antique is almost "good in its skin", as a confident person may be said to be. If your pocketbook does not allow you to indulge in good antiques, you would probably be better off investing in lower cost but good quality modern furniture. In that way, the inexpensive rugs and materials you will have to buy will go better with your more modest furniture. This is a good beginning, because as you get older and your tastes mature and your bank account grows, you can then begin to collect one fine item at a time, all the while enjoying the pieces you were able to afford at the beginning. There are many very fine antique collections that started out just blending in with the furniture at hand until, at some point, after more and more pieces were accumulated, there is a cohesive whole to the collection.
As you become more and more financially successful, even the less expensive antiques can be replaced by rarer and finer items until the perfect antique collection has been amassed. This is a much wiser system than trying to build a collection that may be of dubious value (even if you pay a lot for it) if you do not have the experience and wisdom to make the right choices. Whether a piece of good furniture is from the antique or modern era is irrelevant if the piece is a cherished part of one's life. Antiques and other works of art can be bought, inherited and passed down. You want to be sure to be able to pass down fine works of art and pieces of furniture, so make sure that you choose items that are beautiful in their own right, whatever the period they represent. You don't want the antiques you pass down to end up in the back of a closet or dusty on a shelf because the item was never chosen with care in the first place.

LED Lighting as an Alternative Energy Source
There are many, many advantages to using LED lights as much as possible, especially when we want to save energy on our planet. The light created by LED light bulbs is much safer lighting than that of regular light bulbs ? primarily because most light bulbs become very hot when used and can potentially cause fires. With LED lights you will never as much as burn your fingers touching a bulb, no matter how long it has been lit. However, LED lights can (and already do) serve a lot more purposes for the environment of which people are unaware.
LED lights are usually, and most effectively, designed in colors as opposed to translucent lights. As a matter of fact, some of the very first LED lights were designed for Christmas decorations etc. This is because people wanted safer lights to be sure there were no unfortunate accidents occurring due to hot lights and dry pine needles or outdoor leaves and so on during the holiday season. However, research, design and technology have been updated and are continuously being considered for other reasons.
LED lights are already being used for more purposes than you may think ? and we should focus on incorporating LED lighting into even more of the lighting we use. The following are examples of some ways in which LED lighting has already been utilized in our economy:
o Christmas lights, as I mentioned before are available as LED lights. They have become more and more popular since the cost of LED lights lessened around the year 2002.
o Exit signs, traffic lights, for example, have been used with LED technology as opposed to other forms of lighting.
o Flashlights, toys and other small devices are using LED lights for the benefit of a LED light?s ability to continue to work longer than a light with regular bulbs. In other words, batteries actually perform better and last longer in merchandise that uses LED light.
o Elevator push buttons.
o Status indicators: the status indicators on all kinds of equipment and technological merchandise have begun to use LED lighting.
o Motorcycles and bicycles already have LED lights for safer nighttime riding.
o Movement sensors.
o Glow lights.
o Thin lightweight displays at places such as subway stations, airports, trams, highway signs busses, and ferries have been using LED lighting for awhile. Nonetheless, I believe that we could use this option even more ? LED lighting is a way to improve the environment, reduce electric risks, and eliminate the waste of energy.
o Light bars on emergency vehicles.
o Automotive high-mounted brake lights and truck and bus brake lights have begun to use LED lighting as well.
o Remote controls for stereos, DVD, television, and CD players often use infrared LED lights. It has actually been that way for some time now. People don?t often notice how often they have to change remote batteries ? unless it seems like they have to be changed too frequently. Thus, you may not even notice that you own an LED remote until it finally does require a change of batteries. This happened to me and I realized how much more infrequently LED operated merchandise of all kinds allow batteries to last and last.
o Back lighting for LCD televisions and displays frequently uses LED technology.
o New theatrical stage lighting equipment is being created in LED lighting for primary red ? green ? blue arrangements.
LED lights are usually, and most effectively, designed in colors as opposed to translucent lights. However, these pale to darkly colored lights are quite effective for many purposes. The wonderful idea of LED lighting is one to grasp onto when we reach out for alternative sources of light and energy. Some of the very first LED lights were designed for Christmas decorations, but it does not stop there. LED lights can prevent unfortunate home fires occurring due to the heat generated by burning light bulbs, but are not nearly as inexpensive as we would like just yet. However, research, design and technology have been updated and ways to improve the expenses of LED for more and more purposes are continuously being considered. I hope and predict that in the future the LED modifications we make will certainly make up for the cost in the long run. Because of the ability of LED lighting to last longer than virtually all other forms of regular lighting and because of the safety issues involved, the goal is that LED lighting will become more and more useful as time goes on.

What can increase your sales volume and make you more productive day in and day out?
You've probably heard this three word statement that seperates those who wish they could do better, from those who
really do.
Knowledge is power!
This three word statement is more than just a great philosophy. The more knowledge you have about antiques, the higher the increase in your overall profitability...as long as you use that knowledge. Knowledge can literally make or break your antique business.
Here's a difficult lesson that was taught to a high-minded museum by a shrewd, savvy antique buyer with knowledge.
I love this story! It vividly illustrates the difference between knowing and being in the dark about antiques and their value. I was browing in an antique shop a number of years ago, when I struck up a conversation with the owner. We talked about incredible finds that we had stumbled across over the years. Her story topped anything that I had ever done...hands down!
It all started when she attended the last day of a weekend sale at a local museum. It seems that the museum was desiring to remodel, and they were attempting to raise needed funds by selling off some antiques that had been found in the carriage barn that stood on the property. Obviously, she was not expecting to see anything spectacular because she assumed that the sale would be "cherry-picked".
And then it happened!
While walking through the sale, she discovered a large painting with a faded gold frame. Something about the painting looked strangely familiar, and she thought to herself, "I've seen that in a history book somewhere."
She quickly ran to her vehicle and poured over several large painting identification books that she had brought with her from her personal library. After taking 10 minutes to research, she was almost positive that this painting was a rare item indeed. She went back inside, and with a few minutes left in the sale, she wrote a personal check for $125. and loaded it into her station wagon.
Life took a sudden and drastic turn...for the better!
Upon arriving home, she began to dig deeper with her research tools. She "burned the midnight oil", and as morning broke, her heart was beating faster as she came to the realization that this painting was something very special.
The next morning, after more phone calls and cross-checking, she gingerly loaded the painting and took it to a temperature controlled vault in the same city where she urchased it. This $125. painting later sold for several million dollars at a major auction house, and this woman's financial future was changed in dramatic fashion literally overnight.
The museum curator was appalled, overwhelmed and completely flabbergasted!
Imagine that you are the curator of this museum, and you placed the $125. price tag on this million dollar painting! This tag sale had been held to raise money for projects around the museum. If the curator had only possessed the knowledge to even "check it out", the outcome could have been far more positive for the establishment that he represented!
Knowledge and research made all the difference.
Aside from the curator, think of all the antique dealers, collectors and enthusiasts that had toured this weekend-long tag sale. Here was an item that could change their entire lives financially, and they walked right on by. any one of them could have sold the painting, banked the money, and just "fiddled" around with antiques instead of trying to make a living from them. And the difference was knowledge!
How to get antique knowledge.
With the advent of the Internet, research is easier to do, and the knowledge is much easier to come by. There are literally hundreds, if not thousands of sites that are dedicated to various collectibles, art and antiques.
Visiting the library all day, once a month can be one of the best ways to increase your knowledge of antique items. The library is still one of the most untapped resources for gaining expertise on a variety of antique subjects. Talk to the librarian, ask questions, and dig! The human mind is like a sponge, and someday you may need what you are learning today.
A methodical approach toward research and gaining knowledge can pay huge dividends in your antique world. It's the secret that can make a huge impact in the buying decisions that you make!

Antique Doorknobs ? Knowing When To Change Them
| ||||||
It may be time for new antique doorknobs in your space. If you have an old home and are trying to keep it as historical as you can, that may mean you have gone to a number of great lengths to keep everything that came with it originally. But that's not always easy. We're not recommending tossing out those antique doorknobs right away. By all means first see what you can do to fix them. If the glass antique doorknobs are still in good condition, but are not working right in the door, it may be fixable. You need to pinpoint where the problem is. There are companies that offer new hardware insides for your glass doorknobs that may help them fit more correctly into the door. If it's a little wobbly, there are also buffers, made specifically for glass antique doorknobs, that will fill that space between the knob and the door, without hurting the knob or the door. If the problem with the glass antique doorknobs is in the glass itself, you are in a much tougher situation. Generally, the glass cannot be repaired and therefore you will be forced to just give in and get a new set of antique doorknobs. But don?t give up faith that you can have a beautiful old-looking home. You still have options to keep your home looking like the historical masterpiece it is. It just so happens that in recent years, there has been a resurgence to bring old things back. Antique dealers have been flooded with requests for many types of old, original items. Believe it or not, their inventories often include antique doorknobs and other pieces of hardware that are just as old as your house. You should start calling around to antique dealers you know, or look online, to see if they offer a knob close to the one you need, to make the replacement in your home. Even if they don't have the items now, they may be willing to keep an eye out for just what you need if send a picture or give a good description of the antique doorknobs you are missing. This plan requires patience as it could take weeks, months or even years for the exact antique doorknobs you are looking for to be found. The other option is to take something new that looks old. There is a whole market of replica antique doorknobs that may well fit the bill of what you are missing in your home. Many of the designs being made have been created off of the original glass antique doorknobs of homes throughout history, so you should be able to find a set that will go well in your home.
